A pilot training programme to promote better Jewish-Arab relations on campus in Israel and help the integration of Arab students into higher education, has been launched at Hebrew University. Five Druze high school graduates pioneered the first Druze garin (“nucleus”), a small close-knit group that volunteers in the local community before joining the IDF. This initiative has been created within the IDF’s Nahal Brigade, combining combat duty with community service. National civilian volunteering programmes have had an increasing number of Arab participants year-on-year.
